German
luxury auto brand Audi will start selling its premium A3 sedan in India from
the middle of 2014 which will be assembled in India from the company's
production facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
The
company has started sale of the A3 sedan in only a few countries in Europe and
is expected to launch in the US by April.
Audi
Group CEO Rupert Stadler told news sources in India that India is a
strategically important market for the company as it has huge growth potential
for luxury car segment.
Audi
India had reported 11 % growth in its sales at 10,002 units last year which became
the first luxury car maker to cross the 10,000 milestone in India.
Audi
started production in India from September 2007 with the model Audi A6 and
since then more than 24,000 units of cars have been produced. The Aurangabad
facility produces models like the Audi A4, Audi A6, Audi Q3, Audi Q5 and Audi
Q7.
The
A3 sedan is likely to compete with BMW's 1-series and the Mercedes A-class and
B-class.
The company has decided to invest around 22 billion euros within 2018 in
innovations and new technologies and also in expanding its worldwide
manufacturing structures.
