After
the shutdown of Windows XP, China is focusing to develop an OS based on Linux.
As per news reported in Xinhua, the chief engineer of ministry of Industry and
Information Technology of China, Zhang Feng said that the ministry will boost
its support to develop such an OS.
Support
for the 13 year old Windows XP has been ended by Microsoft from 8th April
and advised users to upgrade to Windows 8 or if necessary get a new PC.
Windows XP is still
being run in almost 70 percent personal computers in China and also in the
telecommunication sectors.
Zhang said that
this shutdown will bring risks the basic telecommunication networks of China
and threaten its overall security.
Chinese internet
service providers like Kingsoft, Sogou, Tencent and other had said in February
that they would provide technical assistance for upgrading systems from Windows
XP and also guard against risks.
Zhang has advised users
of Windows XP to install shield software made in China to keep away any online
attacks or information leakages.
Linux has an
estimated market share of less than 1.5 percent, OS X has about 8 percent and
Windows has nearly 91 percent market share worldwide.
The
Linux OS is assembled under the model of free and open source software
development and distribution and it is a leading OS on mainframe computers,
servers and super computers.
